Qujiang Gr
Type Locality and Naming
Western Zhejiang. Liu Jichen and Zhao Yazeng erected the Qujiang red sandstone in 1927. The type locality for the designation is in the Jinqu basin of west Zhejiang.
Lithology and Thickness
The Qujiang red sandstone erected stands for the set of rock beds that are made up of purple sandstone at the base and purple sandstone in the upper part, being attributed to Paleogene. In 1979 the Zhejiang Petroleum Geological Team recalled it the Qujiang Group and divided it into five members and assigned it to Late Cretaceous. In 1961 Chen Qishi upgraded the first member, the second member, the third member, and the fourth and fifth members into formations, i.e. the Zhongdai Fm, the Jinhua Fm and the Quxian Fm and also assigned them into Late Cretaceous.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The base of the Group marked by purple red and purple gray conglomerate and sandy conglomerate is distinguished from the Yongkang Gr marked by light purple acid crystal and lithic tuff, showing an unconformable contact with the latter. However, in West Zhejiang, the underlying unit below a disconformity is the Jiangde Gr (Hengshan Fm).
Upper contact
Disconformabily overlain by the Tongxiang Fm
